GLC On the Go is seeking an engineer for a full-time government contract for The Neurorobotics Research Group (NRG) within the NIH Clinical Center (CC) Rehabilitation Medicine Department (RMD) located in Bethesda, MD
This is a multi-year effort to develop new wearable robotic devices for use as assistive and rehabilitation training tools in individuals with gait pathology from neuromotor disorders. These devices are custom designed to meet the needs of targeted clinical populations.
Schedule: 40 hours per week – some work may also be performed remotely at the discretion of the Director.
Major Duties
The primary objective is to obtain engineering services to assist in the design, implementation, and experimental evaluation of custom embedded electronics and software interfaces for use in wearable robotic devices.
The contractor will:
- Provide expert design support in design of embedded electronics, integrated circuit boards and microcontrollers, and software/coding to run closed loop control systems.
- Aid in development of front-end graphical user interface design between peripheral computer systems and the embedded systems used on wearable robotic devices.
- Support the technical needs of the NRG section through engineering design and programming tasks.
Major Tasks
- Plan and execute research assignments, including formulating detailed project plans based on identified technical specifications.
- Conduct original research and use analytic methods to solve real world engineering problems.
- Provide technical expertise on embedded electronics design for use in wearable robotic systems to meet stated performance objectives.
- Develop embedded software codes for implementing real-time, closed loop control of actuated robotic systems in microcontroller environments and provide clear documentation and commenting of code to describe its function.
- Develop documentation and standard operating procedures (SOP) for use by NRG in implementation of designed and fabricated devices and systems.
- Assist in the design of experiments utilizing developed wearable robotic products in clinical populations.
- Serve as a technical reviewer of products developed by NRG.
- Participate as member of a team to develop approaches to address complex scientific and other technical problems, derive solutions, convert solutions to equations and then to a format processed by computer.
- Provide technical consultation and instruction in areas of substantive expertise to NRG staff, trainees, or other consultants (as requested)
Requirements
- B.S. degree in electrical engineering, computer science engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in development of embedded electronics or software systems, preferably with experience as a team lead in one of these areas.
- Technical proficiency and demonstrated experience in Python, C/C++, C#, and/or Matlab programming languages.
- Experience developing software-based applications for front-end user interface design.
- Broad understanding of the application of engineering principles to the design of software, preferably on embedded or legacy systems.
- Familiarity with microprocessors (such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi) for real-time control of robotic or other devices.
- Attention to detail in coding, documenting, and testing statistical and computational code.
- Experience providing technical consultation and/or education on complex electronics and/or software products.
