Join a leading acute-care hospital as a Psychiatric RN in Louisville, KY, specializing in adolescent care. This contract position offers the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population while providing essential mental health support. We are seeking dedicated professionals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young patients.
Unit Information: The Clinical Interview Unit consists of 23 beds, with an average daily census of 18-21 patients. We require candidates to have a minimum of 6 months of experience, and first-time travelers will not be accepted. Candidates must have completed at least one travel assignment with the agency.
Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: The unit primarily serves adolescents aged 14-18, dealing with conditions such as suicidal ideation, self-injurious behaviors, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), bipolar disorder, aggression, psychosis, and those in detention or under state guardianship.
Patient Ratios: The desired ratio is 2 RNs per unit, with a minimum of 1 RN per unit. Candidates should be comfortable with the possibility of being the only RN on a full unit.
Required Licenses and Certifications: Candidates must possess BLS certification and will obtain CPI certification on-site. Skills required include:
- De-escalation techniques
- Patience and compassion
- Comfort with physical holds
- IM injections
- Proactive recognition of increased agitation
- Ability to manage multiple escalated patients simultaneously
Support within the Department: The leadership team is highly supportive of employee safety and is willing to implement operational changes as needed. The program coordinator provides organized activities and leads non-licensed groups.
Support within the Facility: Additional support includes therapists, case managers, and security personnel on campus. Dedicated code response resources are available, including transponders, designated response team members, and 24/7 video monitoring staff.
Technology/Equipment: The unit utilizes Cerner for EMR and Omnicell for medication dispensing. Specific equipment includes restraint beds, restraint chairs, and seclusion rooms.
Floating: Candidates may float between children and adults throughout the facility and should be open to schedule and shift flexibility.
Orientation: New employees will undergo a comprehensive orientation, including three 12-hour shifts of unit-specific training. Weekend rotation is expected every third weekend.
Additional Notes: Scrub color is Galaxy Blue, and free parking is available. The unit culture is characterized by high stress and high acuity, requiring compassion for the population served.
