Join a leading acute-care hospital as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse (RN) in Charlotte, NC. This 26-week contract position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment with a focus on high acuity pediatric patients. About the Facility: This facility is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center with 247 licensed beds, recognized as a Teaching Hospital and a Chest Pain Center. The PICU has 24 beds and typically sees a patient census of 21-23.

Unit Information:

  • Required Experience: 2 years of strong high acuity Pediatric ICU experience is essential. Candidates must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: Respiratory issues, Trauma (including penetrating and non-accidental trauma, NAT), DKA, Seizures, Neurosurgical cases, Acute/Chronic Renal Failure, Orthopedic, Surgical, Transplants (Kidney and whole/partial Liver), complex Medical conditions, and Blood Disorders.
  • Patient Ratios: RN ratios vary based on acuity: 2:1, 1:1, 1:2.

Required Licensure & Certifications:

  • RN License
  • BLS
  • PALS

Skills Required:

  • EPIC experience
  • Experience with Artic Sun, EVDs, Camino device (ICP and temp monitoring), Belmont Rapid Infuser
  • Management of critical care vasoactive drip titration and invasive lines (ART lines/CVP)
  • Aseptic and sterile techniques, basic dressing changes
  • Ventilator and trach management, HOFV management
  • Oral/nasal suctioning, g-tube/j-tube management, feeding tubes, chest tubes, epidurals, PCAs
  • Sedation and analgesic drip management, Foley insertion and management
  • Alaris & Medfusion pump management
  • Bedside procedures with providers, discharge skills, CRRT experience
  • Ability/Competency to float to Pediatric CVICU

Support within the Department:

  • 1 Health Care Tech per day to assist with unit secretary duties and nursing support needs
  • Unit Secretary available every shift
  • Charge nurse on duty 24/7
  • Phlebotomy and IV/VAT Team available 24/7
  • Resource Nurse, RT, and APP in-house

Technology/Equipment:

  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV Pump: Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps
  • Med dispensing: Omnicell
  • Monitors: Phillips
  • Equipment: Belmont Rapid Infuser, Accuvein, PIV Ultrasound, Artic Sun, Camino, EV-1000 Vigileo, I-stat and Accuryn

Orientation: 2 days departmental orientation.

Scheduling: No call for travelers. If the PICU cannot utilize them, they may be floated to PCVICU, Peds Progressive, NICU, or general Peds units. RTO requires manager approval, with a schedule cycle every 6 weeks.
